Garden or marquee wedding in Tangier: preparing for wind and weather

Villa, garden, field facing the sea: getting married outdoors in Tangier is magnificent provided you plan for wind, power, access and a plan B.

Getting married in a garden, on a terrace facing the Strait or under a marquee means choosing a setting no hall can offer. It also means accepting that an outdoor reception is prepared differently — in Tangier more than elsewhere, because of the wind.

The wind: the first topic

Wind is frequent in the city and can rise in the late afternoon. It does not make outdoors impossible, but it imposes rules: weighted or anchored structures, marquee closed at the sides if needed, fixed decor (nothing light that flies away), weighted tablecloths, protected candles, secured balloons and arches. Each set-up is decided after a visit to the venue.

The marquee: when and why

Electricity

Lighting, sound, back-up kitchen, refrigeration: the electrical power must be calculated. In a villa, check what the panel can handle; otherwise plan a generator and a technician. A power cut in the middle of the evening is the most avoidable surprise.

Access and logistics

Delivery trucks, furniture routes, marquee installation, guest parking, accessibility for elderly guests: all of this is checked on site. A dirt track that becomes impassable in the rain is a foreseeable problem.

The plan B

Always have a fallback: marquee already up, back-up hall, covered space. Decide in advance who makes the decision to switch and at what time — so as not to improvise on the day.

Guest comfort

Cool evening, uneven ground, mosquitoes, noise: plan path lighting, heaters or blankets if needed, stabilised ground and suitable toilets.

Hours and neighbours

Check the permitted music hours and warn the neighbours. An incident at 11 pm can spoil an evening.
