Opening a café, restaurant or factory in Tangier: making the launch a success and avoiding the 5 classic mistakes

· 4 min read

A café on the marina, a restaurant, a factory: the opening is the first day of your reputation. Five mistakes to avoid, a running order, technical setup and communication for a successful opening in Tangier.

You only get one chance to make a first impression. A successful opening launches a venue, reassures partners, draws the local press and makes people want to return. In Tangier, cafés, restaurants, shops, offices and industrial sites open every year, and the ones that stand out take care over their opening event. Here are the five most common mistakes, then the method.

The 5 mistakes to avoid

  1. Opening too early. An unfinished site, an untrained team or a service not yet run in is on display to every guest. Better a slightly later date than an unfinished venue.
  2. Not defining the audience. Customers, neighbours, partners, officials, press, staff: each audience expects something different. Without a clear list you invite everyone and satisfy no one.
  3. Neglecting protocol. The official moment — speeches, ribbon cutting, tour — needs preparation: who speaks, in what order, with what microphone. Improvisation shows.
  4. Under-sizing the technical setup and reception. A whistling microphone, a queue at the door or music that is too loud spoils a moment that took months to prepare.
  5. Forgetting the aftermath. Without photos, video or a communication plan, the opening stays in the memory of those present. Images extend the effect on social media and with partners.

1. Set the goal

Make the opening known, thank partners, build relations with the authorities, kick-start footfall: the goal determines the format. A café that opens seeks word of mouth and visits; a factory seeks recognition from its partners and the authorities.

2. Build the guest list

Distinguish guests of honour, partners, customers, neighbours, media and local influencers. A precise list lets you size the reception, the cocktail and the programme, and send personalised invitations.

3. The running order

  1. Welcome, signage, handing out a programme or a small gift.
  2. Welcome from the owner.
  3. Speech by a guest of honour, if relevant.
  4. Ribbon cutting or symbolic gesture.
  5. Guided tour of the venue or factory, in small groups.
  6. Cocktail or buffet.
  7. Music and photos.

4. Decoration and atmosphere

Arch, balloons, flowers, roll-ups, entrance lighting, a photo backdrop with the venue’s identity: decoration should reflect the place. A seaside café does not call for the same decor as an industrial site. On opening day, the venue should already look like what it promises to be. See our themed decoration.

5. The technical setup

Sound for speeches, background music, outdoor and indoor lighting, a screen to present the project, a stage or platform depending on the place. In a factory, check the safety of the visit area and plan a marked route. See our event equipment rental.

6. The cocktail or buffet

A buffet cocktail, a buffet, a table of Moroccan sweets: the format depends on the time and number of guests. For a factory, lunch or a cocktail after the tour is common. See our catering service.

7. Visual identity and printing

Sign, roll-ups, banners, directional panels, invitations, badges: printing is a link in the decor and a carrier of the brand. Plan it ahead with the decoration for a consistent result. See our event communication.

8. Images and communication

A photographer, a videographer, a drone if the site allows it, then a short film for Instagram, Facebook and LinkedIn: this is what keeps the opening alive beyond the day. Think of a hashtag, a spot for guests’ photos and a release for local media.

9. A few weeks before and after

  • 6 to 8 weeks before: date, goal, guest list, budget.
  • 4 weeks before: concept, decoration, technical setup, catering, printing.
  • 2 weeks before: invitations, programme, briefing the venue’s team.
  • On the day: set-up, tests, reception.
  • Afterwards: thanks, images, press coverage, follow-up of contacts.
