Negafa, amariya, henna night, procession, outfits: the main moments of a traditional Moroccan wedding, how to prepare them and fit them into your celebration in Tangier.
The Moroccan wedding is an art of ceremony: several stages, outfits that change, music that sets the rhythm of each entrance. Customs vary from one family and one region to another; what follows presents the main moments as they are most often met, and how to prepare them. Your families have the last word on their traditions.
The henna night
An intimate, women’s occasion, the henna night often comes before the wedding: careful decor, music, traditional outfits, henna designs. It is prepared like a small reception in its own right: venue, soft lighting, sound, drinks and cakes.
The negafa
The negafa accompanies the bride throughout the evening: she dresses her, orchestrates the outfit changes and makes sure the traditional moments run smoothly. It is a key role. Book her early, present the running order and coordinate her with the traditional group and the decoration.
The amariya
The amariya is the throne on which the bride is carried by bearers during her entrance. It needs space, experienced bearers and a clear passage: plan for it as soon as you choose the venue, because some entrances do not allow it.
The outfits
Caftan, takchita, ceremonial dress: outfit changes punctuate the evening. They must be timed with the negafa and the music so that each passage happens without dead time. Provide a space at the back to get dressed comfortably.
Traditional music
The traditional group announces the couple’s entrance, accompanies the procession and sets the room alight. Choose it according to the spirit you want, ask for an extract, and define in advance when it plays and when the DJ takes over. See our article on wedding music in Tangier.
Tables, the meal and the sweet table
The traditional meal fits into the running order, with its dishes and service. A sweet table of Moroccan pastries and cakes is a visual must. See our guide to the wedding caterer.
Mixing tradition and modern touches
Many couples keep the main traditional moments and surround them with contemporary decoration, worked lighting and a DJ for the end of the evening. The two coexist very well if the running order is planned in advance.
How to organise
Write down with your families the list of moments you want, book the negafa and the group early, check that the venue allows the amariya’s entrance, then have everything coordinated by one person. That is exactly what we do in our wedding planning in Tangier: we respect your traditions and stage them. Write to us to talk about it.
